Noah sits down to talk with Todd Wilson about God's design for sex within marriage between a man and a woman--balancing the need to hold on to biblical truth while holding on to biblical compassion for those who identify as gay or as same sex attracted.
The topics of gender dysphoria, transgender issues, homosexuality, pornography, and sex outside of marriage are all discussed. Also discussed is how the Church must do a better job in talking about sex and in providing a supported lifestyle path of community for those who are committed to living a single, celibate life.
Dr. Todd Wilson is the Co-Founder and President of the Center for Pastor Theologians and the author of multiple books, including Mere Sexuality. Mere Sexuality was a recent Flip Side Book Club read where Noah and podcast listeners interacted through the book's contents at https://www.noahfilipiak.com/category/the-flip-side-book-club/

Noah interviews Preston Sprinkle on how to talk about politics & polarizing issues. The heart of this topic comes from the social media and political climate we are in where it has become very difficult to have civil and loving conversation with people you disagree with. We also look at way the Church goes too far in being partisan or to the other extreme of avoiding biblical issues that happen to be political.

Preston Sprinkle (Ph.D.) is an international speaker and a New York Times bestselling author, who’s written a dozen books including Embodied: Transgender Identities, the Church  & What the Bible has to say, and People to Be Loved: Why Homosexuality Is not just an Issue. Preston currently serves as the president of The Center for Faith, Sexuality & Gender, an organization that equips Christians to engage questions about faith, sexually & gender with theological faithfulness and courageous love. Preston also hosts the popular podcast “Theology in the Raw” and posts regularly on his YouTube channel “Preston Sprinkle.”

Noah pauses to reflect on the unprecedented time of history we are experiencing with COVID-19. As followers of Jesus, can we reflect on where our security really lies? Can we reflect on how busy and hectic we normally live our lives and what we can do with this forced pause?

Nick and Noah talk through the desire that is underneath the desire to look at pornography, and how the only real way to find freedom is to have that desire met in legitimate ways. Listen in to find out what those legitimate ways are and how you can get past the "every time is the last time" mentality toward pornography and sexual sin. The "legitimate ways" of meeting our deepest desires applies to any area of struggle you may be facing, not just pornography.
Nick is the Executive Director of Pure Desire Ministries. He has been in leadership for 15+ years. He was in Pastoral Ministry at East Hills Alliance Church in Kelso, Washington, for 14 years. Nick has a Bachelor’s in Pastoral Studies from Crown College and an MDiv from Bethel Seminary. He has authored two books, Setting Us Free and Safe: Creating a Culture of Grace in a Climate of Shame.
Pure Desire provides a safe place for hope and healing for men, women, and students impacted by sexual brokenness. Through group resources, counseling, events, and partnerships, men, women, and students can develop sexual integrity, restore broken marriages, and establish healthy relationships.

Noah interviews Tyler St. Clair on his church planting journey in the inner city of Detroit, MI. Tyler is the lead pastor of Cornerstone Church Detroit in Detroit, Michigan. He also serves as the network lead for Church in Hard Places in Acts 29’s S. Midwest Network. Tyler talks about dealing with the grind of pastoring and church planting, and the insecurity that most pastors deal with in wanting larger ministries or more recognition. This insecurity is similar to what every person faces in that we all look for something to give us our value, approval, and acceptance...all the things Jesus offers to us in the gospel when we know we our identity as the Father's beloved sons and daughters.

The first annual State of the Podcast talks about the Flip Side Podcast Survey and some upcoming improvements to the podcast.  Topic of the day is how to live for Christ in this messed up world. How to stop from being gradually assimilated into the world's way of operating, particularly around the around of sex, but also in how we view Scripture and our overall worldview.
Noah's Rant addresses the "shake a hand with a neighbor" time during many church services.

Ep. 21 talks about depression, and depression within the Church specifically.  Why we don't talk about it enough and why we need to talk about it more.  And in general, the Church's hesitation to talk about anything that is vulnerable or deals with our struggles.
Noah's Rant gets into how much people say "like," including Noah himself, and offers you a chance to earn a $1 every time Noah says "like" on the podcast from here on how (legal fine print: starting in episode 22!)

Noah catches up with Jason Redoutey on how encountering the affirming love of God satisfied Jason's lifelong quest for approval and affirmation.  A quest that led him to a double life of porn, lies, womanizing, and cheating in his marriage.  Shame was once the ruler in Jason's life, shame that has been replaced by love and grace, found through vulnerability.  Jason now helps other men find this same overwhelming love of God as one of the directors of Hearts, Alive, and Free.

Noah just moved to Grand Rapids and is living with his gracious in-laws until his house in Lansing sells.  As a result, there's not yet a quiet place to record so this is a bonus episode of a sermon Noah preached on January 20th, 2019.  It is on 1 Peter 1:3-12 and is the last sermon he preached at Crossroads and the most recent sermon he has preached to date!  Be encouraged by the true source of our hope, whatever our circumstances.

Thursday Jul 18, 2019

The last few Flip Side episodes have had the theme of the Father's love healing our shame.  Shame being the feeling that we aren't good enough, that we don't measure up.  Last episode focused in on what truths to remind ourselves of (vs. the lies of shame).  This episode follows up with the key step 2 of the process, and that is having brothers and sisters in Christ who model the Father's love to us.  We take a look at what this looks like, including opening up the mailbag to hear how people have experienced this in real time.  The mailbag entries also give some thoughts about church small groups.  Noah then weighs in on what he thinks of church small groups, and gives listeners a layered plan for finding healing community in their lives.

Friday Jul 05, 2019

Episode 12 provides a practical path to walk to fill the hole inside of us that screams out for approval and to be told we are valuable.  We typically attempt to fill this hole with sexual sin and fantasy, as well as anything from money, our reputation, to our last three Facebook posts.
Noah's Rant describes why it would be better if robins were extinct.
Show Notes:
Jamie Winship talking about shame and living in the truth, instead of believing the lies.

In episode 11 (73), Noah interviews Kevin Butcher, Noah's identical twin, give or take 30 years.  Noah and Kevin are both 8's on the Enneagram, ENFP's, D's on theDISC, church planters in the inner city, entrepreneurs, authors, and podcasters... look out!  Kevin's similar wiring to Noah has made him a great mentor.  Kevin is the executive director of Rooted Ministries, a nonprofit designed to come alongside isolated and discouraged pastors.  If that describes you, reach out to Kevin at www.rootedministries.co
Kevin was a lead pastor for 35 years - most recently the founding and lead pastor of Hope Community Church of Detroit, a messy fellowship of human beings from every kind of racial, economic, and educational background who own their emptiness and pursue healing through the love of God in Jesus Christ.  In 2018, after 16 years at Hope, Kevin launched and became the executive director of Rooted Ministries, Inc.
Kevin is passionate about helping believers live in authentic community — across racial, socioeconomic and all lines of division — learning to truly love one another in the chaos of real relationships, learning to celebrate our differences, and learning to stay together even when we don't like one another – so that the world will see a living picture of Jesus Christ.
He is also passionate about helping believers find healing and freedom from childhood wounds — the ones that often keep us trapped, living addictively and in deep dysfunction – unable to experience true freedom in Christ. Kevin has come to believe this kind of deep healing comes only through personal, transformational experience with the powerful love of God in Jesus Christ.

Episode 10 discusses the June 2nd scenario of Pastor David Platt praying for President Donald Trump from the stage of a McLean Bible Church worship service.  You probably already have lots of predetermined feelings about this, so rather than write something that will make you listen (if you agree), or dismiss this (if you disagree), go ahead and listen and see if there's a different way to approach topics like this than you are used to.
And a tragic day in Flip Side history, there is no Noah's Rant!  This turned into a "double episode" length-wise so sit back, catch some corn, and enjoy!
