After wrapping up the Flip Side Book Club's reading of Spiritual Friendship, Noah interviews author Wes Hill on the book's subject of providing a path of love for celibate gay Christians. A path that still follows the Bible's command for sex to be within the marriage of a man and a woman. The interview talks through the different labels of "same sex attracted," "gay Christian," and "gay celibate Christian," the theological question of original sin as it relates to same sex attraction, but is primarily focused on helping celibate gay / same sex attracted Christians have hope and in helping the Church create community for them.

Episode 38 takes us to a recent sermon Noah did on Luke 7:36-50, where a "sinful woman" anoints Jesus' feet with her hair and tears. This interruption of an elite dinner party led a Pharisee, Jesus, and this woman to have to each make a crucial choice. Their choices are choices that each of us face as well. As our nation attempts to recover from a divisive election, this message brings clarity to what ushering in God's Kingdom looks like in the here and now.

Noah introduces the next Flip Side Book Club book, Spiritual Friendship by Wesley Hill. Pick up your copy today and sign up to be a part of the book club here. Spiritual Friendship explores gay celibate friendships or partnerships of Christians who are committed to a high view of Scripture and God's design for sex and marriage to be for a man and a woman. The book club will be a place we can respectfully wrestle with, debate, and converse with Wesley's thought-provoking and challenging ideas. It's more than okay to disagree and give challenges as we sharpen each other in our understanding. Noah will be interviewing Wesley on the podcast in January and book club members will be welcomed to send in their questions for Wesley to answer.

Also of note is Noah's long awaited blog post: Is Masturbation a Sin?

The topic of this episode is based around a sermon Noah preached recently on Jesus calming the storm in Mark 4:35-39. In a chaotic season of COVID-19, racism, and a divisive election, let this passage of Scripture bring peace to these chaotic waters and the daily pain of living in a fallen world.

Episode 35 brings an interview with Kevin DeVries, founder and president of Grace Explorations. Kevin's story includes two divorces, climbing huge mountains, looking for Noah's Ark, skiing to the North Pole, and more. Kevin was confronted with the emptiness inside of him, which led him to a path of vulnerability and letting Jesus' grace meet him in his brokenness. This led Kevin to found Grace Explorations, a place for men to tell their stories of meeting this type of grace amidst their brokenness. Kevin recently had cardiac arrest while out for a run. He died for 15 minutes, met the Risen Christ, and tells about the amazing experience.

Noah sits down to talk with Todd Wilson about God's design for sex within marriage between a man and a woman--balancing the need to hold on to biblical truth while holding on to biblical compassion for those who identify as gay or as same sex attracted.
The topics of gender dysphoria, transgender issues, homosexuality, pornography, and sex outside of marriage are all discussed. Also discussed is how the Church must do a better job in talking about sex and in providing a supported lifestyle path of community for those who are committed to living a single, celibate life.
Dr. Todd Wilson is the Co-Founder and President of the Center for Pastor Theologians and the author of multiple books, including Mere Sexuality. Mere Sexuality was a recent Flip Side Book Club read where Noah and podcast listeners interacted through the book's contents at https://www.noahfilipiak.com/category/the-flip-side-book-club/

Noah interviews Preston Sprinkle on how to talk about politics & polarizing issues. The heart of this topic comes from the social media and political climate we are in where it has become very difficult to have civil and loving conversation with people you disagree with. We also look at way the Church goes too far in being partisan or to the other extreme of avoiding biblical issues that happen to be political.

Preston Sprinkle (Ph.D.) is an international speaker and a New York Times bestselling author, who’s written a dozen books including Embodied: Transgender Identities, the Church  & What the Bible has to say, and People to Be Loved: Why Homosexuality Is not just an Issue. Preston currently serves as the president of The Center for Faith, Sexuality & Gender, an organization that equips Christians to engage questions about faith, sexually & gender with theological faithfulness and courageous love. Preston also hosts the popular podcast “Theology in the Raw” and posts regularly on his YouTube channel “Preston Sprinkle.”

Nick and Noah talk through the desire that is underneath the desire to look at pornography, and how the only real way to find freedom is to have that desire met in legitimate ways. Listen in to find out what those legitimate ways are and how you can get past the "every time is the last time" mentality toward pornography and sexual sin. The "legitimate ways" of meeting our deepest desires applies to any area of struggle you may be facing, not just pornography.
Nick is the Executive Director of Pure Desire Ministries. He has been in leadership for 15+ years. He was in Pastoral Ministry at East Hills Alliance Church in Kelso, Washington, for 14 years. Nick has a Bachelor’s in Pastoral Studies from Crown College and an MDiv from Bethel Seminary. He has authored two books, Setting Us Free and Safe: Creating a Culture of Grace in a Climate of Shame.

Noah interviews Tyler St. Clair on his church planting journey in the inner city of Detroit, MI. Tyler is the lead pastor of Cornerstone Church Detroit in Detroit, Michigan. He also serves as the network lead for Church in Hard Places in Acts 29’s S. Midwest Network. Tyler talks about dealing with the grind of pastoring and church planting, and the insecurity that most pastors deal with in wanting larger ministries or more recognition. This insecurity is similar to what every person faces in that we all look for something to give us our value, approval, and acceptance...all the things Jesus offers to us in the gospel when we know we our identity as the Father's beloved sons and daughters.

Ep. 21 talks about depression, and depression within the Church specifically.  Why we don't talk about it enough and why we need to talk about it more.  And in general, the Church's hesitation to talk about anything that is vulnerable or deals with our struggles.

Noah catches up with Jason Redoutey on how encountering the affirming love of God satisfied Jason's lifelong quest for approval and affirmation.  A quest that led him to a double life of porn, lies, womanizing, and cheating in his marriage.  Shame was once the ruler in Jason's life, shame that has been replaced by love and grace, found through vulnerability.  Jason now helps other men find this same overwhelming love of God as one of the directors of Hearts, Alive, and Free.
