Ep. 56: You Are Human

Monday Oct 25, 2021

Monday Oct 25, 2021

As Christians, we often think (or are told) that we aren't allowed to feel disappointment, worry, anxiety, and sadness. We are implored by friends to have "the joy of the Lord" instead, or to remember how much God loves you. If God loves you, you should feel happy and not sad. These platitudes make us feel like we have to be robots or angels instead of humans. Meanwhile, God created us to experience emotion. He created us human. And He gives you grace to experience life as a human.

Noah recommends the Life on Side B podcast, catches up on the mailbag, and asks the probing question, what has God put on your heart to do? The context of this question is around the safety and security of our tribes, and how often we don't do what God is telling us to do because of the fear that comes with leaving this safety and security.

Monday Aug 09, 2021

Noah discusses Christianity Today's The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill as well as Joanna Sawatsky, Rebecca Gregoire Lindenbach, and Sheila Wray Gregoire's book The Great Sex Rescue.

Noah talks about two powerful experiences he had where God revealed this deep level of love for him, and invites listeners in to experiencing this love as well.

We are celebrating the 50th episode of The Flip Side in the only way you can celebrate such an incredible feat: with over 5 HOURS of Noah's Rant! We have taken every Noah's Rant ever recorded in the history of the world and pasted them together in one fluid Lord-of-the-Rings-esque episode for you. In fact, it is probably even better than The Lord of the Rings now that we think about it.

Sit back and enjoy the absurdity!

Noah interviews his friend and mentor Kevin Butcher about his new book Free (available April 6th).

Are you weary? Trying to follow Jesus and be a “good Christian,” only to hear the voice of shame whisper, try harder?Good Christians are supposedly known for diligently practicing spiritual disciplines like Bible study, prayer, evangelism, and serving God. Disciplines that are expected, through inspired effort, to conquer sin in us and in the world. The tragedy is, so few Christians understand that we aren’t just sinful but wounded. We don’t need a list of disciplines. We need a Healer, a Deliverer to come and set us free. Here is the truth: We have a Healer. His name is Jesus Christ. He loves us. His calls us first to own how desperate we are—for him; and then to accept his invitation to abide in his great love.Kevin Butcher points us toward this healing Jesus, who offers us his all-encompassing love. You will find nothing here about lists and shoulds. Instead, you will discover how to fall in love with Jesus and then how to walk with him—not in drudgery, but freedom—abiding in his love. A love that rescues us from drudgery and shame, surrounding us with joy even in our darkest hour. A love so powerful that it births our worship, obedience, and willingness to surrender all to him.Even when hell is at your doorstep, the love of Jesus will surround you, protect you, empower you, and set you free. Because God’s love isn’t just important to your journey—God’s love is everything.

Noah opens up about his own insecurities and brings the Flip Side back around to how to tap into the love of our Father to satisfy our deepest longings. These longings manifest themselves in our sexual brokenness and desires, as well as more subtle things like our unending longing for more social media follows, likes, and statistics. Noah talks about his recent struggles as an author in these areas and focuses the episode around the reminders he, and listeners, need to hear regularly from God's spirit about how we are His beloved sons and daughters. His love is the only thing that can satisfy these cravings, but it's something we have to continue feeding on over and over again.

After wrapping up the Flip Side Book Club's reading of Spiritual Friendship, Noah interviews author Wes Hill on the book's subject of providing a path of love for celibate gay Christians. A path that still follows the Bible's command for sex to be within the marriage of a man and a woman. The interview talks through the different labels of "same sex attracted," "gay Christian," and "gay celibate Christian," the theological question of original sin as it relates to same sex attraction, but is primarily focused on helping celibate gay / same sex attracted Christians have hope and in helping the Church create community for them.

Episode 38 takes us to a recent sermon Noah did on Luke 7:36-50, where a "sinful woman" anoints Jesus' feet with her hair and tears. This interruption of an elite dinner party led a Pharisee, Jesus, and this woman to have to each make a crucial choice. Their choices are choices that each of us face as well. As our nation attempts to recover from a divisive election, this message brings clarity to what ushering in God's Kingdom looks like in the here and now.

Noah introduces the next Flip Side Book Club book, Spiritual Friendship by Wesley Hill. Pick up your copy today and sign up to be a part of the book club here. Spiritual Friendship explores gay celibate friendships or partnerships of Christians who are committed to a high view of Scripture and God's design for sex and marriage to be for a man and a woman. The book club will be a place we can respectfully wrestle with, debate, and converse with Wesley's thought-provoking and challenging ideas. It's more than okay to disagree and give challenges as we sharpen each other in our understanding. Noah will be interviewing Wesley on the podcast in January and book club members will be welcomed to send in their questions for Wesley to answer.

Also of note is Noah's long awaited blog post: Is Masturbation a Sin?

The topic of this episode is based around a sermon Noah preached recently on Jesus calming the storm in Mark 4:35-39. In a chaotic season of COVID-19, racism, and a divisive election, let this passage of Scripture bring peace to these chaotic waters and the daily pain of living in a fallen world.

Episode 35 brings an interview with Kevin DeVries, founder and president of Grace Explorations. Kevin's story includes two divorces, climbing huge mountains, looking for Noah's Ark, skiing to the North Pole, and more. Kevin was confronted with the emptiness inside of him, which led him to a path of vulnerability and letting Jesus' grace meet him in his brokenness. This led Kevin to found Grace Explorations, a place for men to tell their stories of meeting this type of grace amidst their brokenness. Kevin recently had cardiac arrest while out for a run. He died for 15 minutes, met the Risen Christ, and tells about the amazing experience.
